Carers may be in charge of administering medication to clients or only prompting them to take their medicines. The Medication Administration task is the only task that by default has the medication list added, making it the required task for recording both administered and prompted medication in the client's eMAR.

Good Practice: Clear Instructions

You can use the dosage instructions field in the medications to add clear instructions for a medication that is prompted. For example, you can use the dosage instructions field in the medications to add clear instructions about a medication that is prompted:

How to record medication prompts in the eMAR?

You can use one of these two options:

1- Use the Medication Administration task

When the Medication Administration task is added to visits, carers can report each medication as Given or Not Given.

  • Carers must always select one of the two options; otherwise, the medication will be recorded as Missed in the eMAR, which can raise concerns.

  • When a medication is prompted, the carer will select the Not Given option (because they have not given the medication to the client).

  • The app will then ask for the reason why the medication is marked as Not Given.

  • The carer will select the reason: Prompted.

2- Use a custom task containing a medication list action

You can also create a custom task specifically for medication prompting:

  1. Go to Settings > General Settings > Tasks.

  2. Create a task with your preferred name (e.g., Medication Prompt-Recorded in the eMAR).

  3. From Action types, select the Medication administration list.

4. Make sure you select this new task when creating your clients' visits and visit recurrences.

The next steps for the carer are the same: click on the medication and report it as Not Given, followed by the reason Prompted.

Medication Prompted in the eMAR

No matter which option you select, if the carers reported the dose as Not Given + Prompted, this is how the report will appear in the eMAR:.

Tip: By default, Not Given + reason reports use the colour red. If you want to change this colour to green (as shown in the example image), contact Support and we can change this for you.
